Dawgs open the season with a series in Statesboro against Georgia Southern. Righty Sean McLaughlin draws the opening start, becoming the first freshman to take the opening day mound for the Dawgs since 1972. McLaughlin, who was picked in the late 30s round of the MLB draft is from Johns Creek. He played high school ball for Northview HS. He reportedly has a 93mph fastball.
He was projected to be a possible closer, so either the starting rotation is looking very thin or he came on strong. He'll also get an outfield starting spot at least one game over the weekend series to keep his bat in the line up as he hit over .450 in high school, with some power.
As for the rest of the Dawgs, C Brett Deloach, SS Kyle Farmer, and 3B Curt Powell all have over 100 starts for the Red and Black and will get plenty of playing time this year. The pitching rotation is very young and will need to come around in order to make an NCAA run.
After the three in Statesboro, the Dawgs open Foley Field for the season on Wednesday against Kennesaw State.
